How To Learn Morse Code Alphabet (Chart & Translator)

Morse code is probably the most famous of all methods of telecommunication. Very simple, Morse code is easy to learn and very helpful to communicate from great distances.

You can send signals as tones, clicks, or even with lights. Someone who has practiced Morse can understand it without the use of any equipment, making it very useful during emergency situations.

Learning this language adds another tool to your well-rounded arsenal.

Still in use today by some pilots, radio navigation aids, and amateur radio operators, Morse is a great way to signal for help. Probably the most well-known of all Morse code signals is the SOS signal, pictured below.
Each letter, or character, in Morse code is represented by a series of dots and/or dashes. The length of a “dash” lasts three times as long as the length of a “dot”. For example, the letter “S” is represented by three consecutive dots and the letter “O” is represented by three consecutive dashes.

So in the photo above you can clearly see how “SOS” translates into · · · — — — · · · in Morse code. You can signal this by flashing a mirror or toggling a flashlight.

The photo below is the alphabet in Morse code, as well as the numbers 0 – 9.

I know this looks tough and impossible to learn, but I learned this language in about a couple weeks by using a handy little method. After the first few days I knew a handful of letters without cheating and its a very simple method.

For every dash (or “dah”) you go to the left, and for every dot (or “dit”) you go to the right. So for example the letter “L” is · — · · by going to the right once, then left, then right twice.

If you read — · — what would you see it as? By going left once (dash) then right once (dot), followed by one more left (dash) you would come to the letter “K”.

Now try to spell your name by following the above method and tracing the paths to your letters.

By practicing just 5-10 minutes a day you could learn the whole alphabet in Morse code in no time at all. This audio file below demonstrates how the whole alphabet sounds like.

Though it goes by a little quickly, a skilled listener could easily understand it. If you want to listen to the alphabet more slowly, click here.

To make it a little more fun, try getting someone else in on it and practice learning Morse code together. Write easy words to start off and see how long it takes you to use the chart to translate the word, then proceed to short sentences.

Once you begin to get the hang of that, start writing out paragraphs for your partner. When they do this for you, try to translate as many of the letters and words as you can without cheating, then you’ll know which ones you need more practice on.

Keep at it and you’ll be able to communicate in Morse code if all other communication systems go down.

if you need to encode / decode morse code online, there is a pure javascript / nodejs library (~1.4 kb) for encode / decode morse code messages, unicode supported, download it here. Javascript Library support Unicode Chinese Moss code encoding.
