The Playstation 2 is one of my favorite consoles of all time. I have so many good memories of playing games like ATV Offroad Fury 2 and NCAA Football 2002. The game that really got me hooked on the PS2 was Kingdom Hearts, more specifically Kingdom Hearts 2. I have always liked the classic Disney movies, and the fact that I could fight Scar alongside Simba, made the Disney fanboy in me jump for joy. Granted, that wasn’t the only thing I enjoyed about the game. It was fairly challenging in certain parts of the game, and I would find myself playing for hours on end trying to advance past those levels. I never knew so much enjoyment could come from one game.
Well E3 this week has sparked that enjoyment once again. The Square Enix presentation showed a clip of what many have been waiting for (and some quit waiting for) for about 10 years- Kingdom Hearts 3! There was a teaser back at the 2014 E3 conference, but there was no gameplay or even a cinematic from KH3 to go with it. It was more of an announcement for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix. This year, however, we finally got to see gameplay…. and man does it look good. I may have fanboyed a little bit (okay, a lot) when I saw it. It took me back to being a 12 year old kid playing KH2. There wasn’t a release date – just a note saying “Now in Development”. I am actually OK with this though.
Over these past 10 years, we have had four Kingdom Hearts installments for handheld devices. The worst part about all of these isn’t the fact that they are on handheld- it’s the fact that with every one of these releases, Kingdom Hearts fans thought they were going to finally get to play KH3. Fans were pretty much done with hoping for KH3. I was almost at that point, but I just couldn’t bring myself to believe that they would just completely forget about the core KH games. I was happy to be right. I have already started to hype myself up for KH3. I know that it will probably be another couple of years before the actual release, but the fact that there is finally gameplay to look at just brings me joy. To all of my fellow Kingdom Hearts fans, I hope you are just as excited as I am for this. May you never become heartless.
