Which Survival Tools Help Les Stroud Survived In Harshest Field Environments

Les Stroud, the star of the Discovery Channel’s show Survivorman, has paired up with Camillus knives to bring us some quality survival tools.  Stroud has survived some of the harshest and remote environments around the Earth in his show, with no camera crew and no food or water.  He films it all himself and stays out for 7 straight days, using only his survival skills and knowledge of his surroundings to provide himself with food, water, and shelter.

In his “survival line” from Camillus, there are 6 blades – 3 knives, 1 machete, 1 hatchet, and 1 blade saw.  There are also 5 “hunting line” knives that are more for those who need to skin game and hunt more than going out in the wild to survive and use for any situation. We will focus on the 6 “survival line” blades.

I’ll start you off with this video of Les Stroud talking about his line of survival knives.

  • fire starter

The SK Desert is the smallest of the Les Stroud survival knives, with a folding blade with dual thumb studs.  The handle is very ergonomic and features nylon/rubber scales over its liner lock frame.  The handle has the pocket clip for carry and is where the built in fire starter is located.  It is available on Amazon for around $23.00, check out the link at the bottom of the page.

SK Jungle
The SK Jungle is a curved machete with a fine-edged, 440A stainless steel blade.  The blade has a length of 11.75″ (18.1″ overall length) and the machete weighs 2.4 pounds. The SK Jungle has the following survival features:

  • fire starter
  • knurled steel pommel

The tri-bonded, ABS structured handle has a built-in hammering surface (knurled steel pommel), allowing you to drive tent stakes into the ground and whatever other tough jobs you have to do.  It has a molded, ballistic-nylon sheath with a belt loop, which is where the fire starter is, and a trail map mesh pocket.  It is available on Amazon for around $44.00, check out the link at the bottom of the page.

SK Vigor Hatchet

The SK Vigor Hatchet features a Carbonitride titanium bonded blade and has hammer and chisel capabilities.  It has a ballistic nylon sheath with a belt loop and weighs just over 2 pounds.  It has a blade length of 5.25″ and its dimensions are 21.6″ x 1.6″ x 8.3″.  Other than the benefits of having a hatchet with you, the SK Vigor Hatchet comes with just 1 survival feature:
